Knapwell 28th August
Last week died, after a tedious illness, the Rev. Mr.
Musgrove, rector of Knapwell, in this county; which living, we hear, is in the
gift of Thomas Parker, Esq.
1774
Elsworth 10th December Suicide.
Yesterday morning one Susan Warner, an inhabitant of
Elsworth in this county, about 30 years old, threw herself into a pond near her
habitation and was drowned. She subsisted by an allowance from the parish, and
had been justly rebuked the day before by one of the officers, for her loose
and disorderly way of life, instead of profiting by which, she declared she
would destroy herself.

Elsworth 10th August. Game conservation.
WHEREAS the GAME in the Manors of Elsworth, Papworth,
and Fen Drayton, in the county of Cambridge, have been greatly destroyed for
some years past, Mr. Holworthy, lord of those manors, particularly requests
that all qualified persons will forbear shooting through the ensuing season.
Unqualified persons trespassing on the said manors will be prosecuted as the
law directs, there being a gamekeeper consistently employed for detecting
poachers, etc.
Elsworth 24th August. Coming of age
festivities.
On Sunday last, being the day when Matthew Holworthy,
of Elsworth, in this county, Esq; carne of age, a large ox was proportioned out
to every poor family in that village, with plenty of bread and beer. The next
day a most sumptuous entertainment was provided for that gentleman's friends,
tenants, and the principal inhabitants of Elsworth; and in the evening four
hogsheads of ale were distributed amongst the populace. A large band of music
attended the festival, which was conducted with the greatest decorum and
harmony; the whole village and its environs were alive, and the only emulation
which seemed to prevail was, who should best testify his joy upon this happy
occasion.

Saturday last, one William Wade of Elsworth in this
county, who had been brought to Cambridge in order to be sworn to his
settlement, was suddenly taken ill in the Rose-yard, and soon after expired. As
the populace reflected severely upon the parish officers at Elsworth, for their
supposed humanity in compelling the above person to swear to his settlement, we
have the authority of the pauper's father on his oath before two justices, to
say, that the deceased having been in an indifferent state of health for about
a fortnight past, was desirous of ascertaining his settlement for which purpose
he accompanied his father that morning from Elsworth; and that he was not in
any manner compelled there by the parish officers.
